Rio, the Swainson's Hawk

Healthy Animals, Healthy People, Healthy Planet

Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine released a 4 year-old Swainson's Hawk named "Rio," back to the wild after spending two years being rehabilitated.   WSU veterinarian Dr. Nickol Finch said the bird was brought in by a Good Samaritan from the Oaksdale area in 2008 and was found to have a broken wrist due to a shotgun blast.  Fears were the wrist would become so arthritic he would never fly again.  But with the help of WSU's Raptor Rehabilitation Club and WSU veterinarians Rio made a remarkable recovery and today soared off from the top of Steptoe Butte at noon to perhaps migrate as far as Argentina.  Released in May 2010.
