For Whitney Van Gorkom, the EschLEAD program has been a transformative experience, allowing her to combine her passion for business with the world of scientific research. A management information systems major set to graduate in spring 2026, Whitney works in the Baylink Lab, where she is helping develop a target product profile and gaining invaluable project management experience.
The EschLEAD (Learn, Experience, Apply, Deliver) program is designed to provide undergraduates from all backgrounds with immersive, hands-on opportunities in cutting-edge research labs. By pairing real-world applications with mentorship and skill-building, EschLEAD opens the door for students like Whitney to explore careers that intersect science, business, and innovation.
What has been the most valuable experience in the EschLEAD program so far?
The most valuable experience with the EschLEAD program so far has been being able to learn more about project management and gain experiences and knowledge that will be greatly helpful in my future career. Some of these experiences include interviewing internship candidates and developing a professional marketing analysis.
How do you see the EschLEAD program shaping your future career goals?
I see the EschLEAD program shaping my future career goals greatly as it has shown me how much I enjoy project management and that I would like to continue to pursue that career in the future. Additionally, the program is providing me with valuable experiences that will be valuable to future employers.
What advice would you give to future students interested in undergraduate research and/or joining the EschLEAD program?
I would tell a future student interested in the EschLEAD program to put themselves out there and apply. I would tell them that it’s important to ask questions and let people around you teach you new skills. It’s important to keep an open mind especially when in a new learning environment.
What are your plans after graduation, and how is the program helping you prepare for them?
My plan after graduating WSU is to enter into a career as a project manager. The EschLEAD program is helping me follow this path as I am currently gaining experience as a project manager and learning more about the processes that are involved in the position.
Has participating in the program changed how you view science and research?
The program has changed the way I look at science and research. I used to think that I would need a STEM degree and intensive knowledge in specific areas to be involved in science. Through this program, I see that there are other sides to research that involve skills outside of just STEM. As someone who is interested in STEM as well as business this was an exciting realization.
