Dr. Jerry Newbrey was more than a professor of anatomy and histology at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine — he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration. Known for his creativity in the classroom and an unforgettable sense of humor, Dr. Newbrey had a gift for making complex science engaging and memorable. His passion for teaching and his deep care for students left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him — from his colleagues to generations of future veterinarians.

Following his tragic passing in a mountaineering accident, the college established the Jerry Newbrey pre-clinical teaching awards in his honor. It stands as a tribute to Dr. Newbrey’s legacy and as a way to recognize faculty who embody the same spirit of excellence in teaching within WSU’s pre-clinical veterinary curriculum.
