Biography

Dr. Andrea Rediske joins Washington State University as a Teaching Assistant Professor in the School of Molecular Biosciences, bringing over two decades of experience in science education. A Washington State native from Richland, she is delighted to return to her home state to contribute to WSU’s academic mission.

Dr. Rediske’s career in higher education began in 2001 as a part-time instructor at Valencia College in Florida, teaching Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy & Physiology. She also served as a Microbiology instructor at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California (2003-2005) and worked as a writer and editor for a textbook publisher (2012-2014). In 2014, motivated to enhance her pedagogical practice, she pursued her doctorate in Science Education at the University of Central Florida, graduating in August 2017. She was appointed as a full-time professor at Valencia College that same year, achieving tenure in 2022. She has served as the biology coordinator for her department, mentoring part-time instructors, and served as Interim Dean of the East Campus Science Department at Valencia College from 2024 to 2025.

Research Interest

  • Master’s research: Utilization of ultrasound combined with antibiotics to treat biofilm infections of implanted medical devices
  • Doctoral research: Post-secondary science education assessment methods and curriculum development
  • Current research areas:
    • Using research-based methods to develop effective in-person and online curricula
    • Continuing development and analysis of the Microbiology for Health Sciences Concept Inventory (MHSCI)

Publications

Professional Service

  • Biology Coordinator, East Campus Science Department: August 2021 – May 2024. Observed part-time faculty teaching in-person and online modalities; mentor new part-time faculty members; assist part-time faculty in implementing active learning strategies, robust feedback to students, authentic assessment, and peer-to-peer interactions in their courses.
  • Assessment Coordinating Committee (ACC): August 2021 – January 2024. Worked with other committee members to review course and program learning outcomes following Valencia College’s Learning Outcomes Assessment Model developed by Assessment Leadership Teams (ALT) in all disciplines across the college. Work with the ACC to produce appropriate documentation of all ALTs to meet accreditation needs of the college.
  • Valencia College East Campus Faculty Senate Vice President/President Elect: July 2023 – May 2024. Served as the principal assistant to the President of the Faculty Senate, act on behalf of the President when necessary, and perform other duties as requested.
  • Valencia College East Campus Faculty Senate: July 2022 – July 2023. Served as a representative of the East Campus Science department, bringing concerns and issues to the faculty from the department, collaborate with faculty senators on matters of strategic issues related to future development of the college, campus improvement, and other matters of business related to the full faculty assembly.
  • Assessment Leadership Team (ALT): August 2020 – August 2022. Collaborated with microbiology instructors across four Valencia College campuses to review course learning outcomes, determine areas for improvement, develop and implement an improvement plan and analyze the results of the improvement plan.
  • American Society for Microbiology Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) Planning Committee, Poster Review Chair, 2024 – 2025. Guides review of abstracts submitted for poster sessions, ensuring ensuring that the accepted posters align with the conference’s focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning in microbiology education.
  • Section Editor, Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education, Research Section, 2018 – 2023. Assigned reviewers with relevant research experience to articles submitted to the JMBE research section. Worked with Research Senior editors on reviewing and giving feedback and editorial review to potential authors.
