What initially drew you to your major?

What drew me to my major was my fascination in learning about the chemical processes within us and other living organisms. I decided to double major in microbiology after taking a dual-credit microbiology class and lab through the College of Western Idaho in high school. I loved how fascinating microorganisms were and wanted to continue exploring that field.

Who has been the most influential mentor or professor during your time at WSU?

The most influential mentor I have had at WSU is my AAPI mentor, Teann. She helped me discover opportunities I could pursue at WSU, introduced me to events I could attend, and was always there when I had questions as a freshman. The most influential professor has been Dr. Hinz, who is the advisor of the club I co-founded and co-lead. He was also an amazing professor who furthered my passion for science and gave me the opportunity to be a TA for a BIO 107 lab section. His guidance and encouragement motivated me to pursue big and bright opportunities.

Have you had any opportunities to work in a lab or conduct research while at WSU?

Yes, I am part of the Driskell Lab. I always wanted to participate in research before coming to college, and this dream became a reality. This experience has impacted my studies by teaching me new skills and techniques, pushing me to grow academically and personally and helping me become a stronger communicator of science through discussions with my PI, peers, and at SURCA. Research has truly helped me develop both as a student and as a person.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about majoring in a field within the College of Veterinary Medicine?

My advice is to start networking early, try joining clubs, and talk to your peers in your classes. I would also recommend keeping a planner and building a routine, so you do not fall behind in your classes. Do not be afraid to try new things even if they feel outside your comfort zone. Never be discouraged if you are told no, keep trying and you will be able to turn your dreams into reality.

What’s your favorite thing about WSU?

My favorite thing about WSU is that there are so many opportunities to help me thrive as a student. Not only are the organizations and clubs that are fun to be a part of, but the academic resources like tutoring have also been really helpful.

What are your post-graduation plans?

My post-graduation plan is to attend medical school. I see my education at WSU helping me achieve this through the coursework that prepares me to succeed on the MCAT, as well as the opportunities that have helped me grow as a person and become a stronger applicant for medical school in the future.

What hobbies or extracurricular activities have you enjoyed at WSU, and how have they enriched your time here?

My hobbies include music, reading, and art. At WSU, I had been involved in the Cougar Marching Band, and I loved the community it provided. It really enriched my time here by giving me a way to show my pride in being a part of the WSU community.

What’s a fun or surprising fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

A fun fact about me is that I can play two instruments: the tenor saxophone and the clarinet. I have actually been playing the clarinet for 10 years now!
