Q&A with genetics and cell biology major Danika Dalvi

Danki Dalvi poses near a bridge.

Genetics and cell biology major Danika Dalvi has always been drawn to science, but it wasn’t until she discovered her passion for genetics that she truly found her path. Now a member of the Law Lab, Danika is gaining hands-on experience working with mammalian cell cultures and exploring a future career in research. Between her time in the lab and her hunt for the best coffee in the Pullman-Moscow area, she’s building the foundation for a future in science and discovery.

What initially drew you to your major?

I have always loved science, and I knew I wanted to eventually have a career in science. I was originally a biochemistry major, but I realized I enjoyed genetics more and I switched my major.

Who has been the most influential mentor or professor during your time at WSU?

Dr. Nathan Law and Dr. Mustika Rahmawati have been my most influential mentors at WSU. I never considered exploring research before meeting them and they have given me the opportunity to learn so many new skills. I am now considering a career in research because of how much I enjoy working in lab with them.

Have you had any opportunities to work in a lab or conduct research while at WSU?

I currently am a part of Law Lab at WSU. I love being a part of this lab. Getting the opportunity to physically perform techniques that we learn about in class have allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the material. Being a part of research has also improved my critical thinking skills, which has helped me in many of my classes. My favorite part of lab is getting the opportunity to work with primary mammalian cell cultures of spermatogonia stem cells. I have named each culture after a celebrity (Sebastian Stan, Tom Blythe, Theo James, and Sidharth Malhotra).

What advice would you give to someone thinking about majoring in a field within the College of Veterinary Medicine?

I would tell someone thinking of majoring in a field within the College Veterinary Medicine to try and join a research lab as early as possible.

What hobbies or extracurricular activities have you enjoyed at WSU?

I have enjoyed exploring new coffee shops in the Pullman/Moscow area. This has resulted in me developing a caffeine addiction.

What are your post-graduation plans?

My plan after graduation is to get an advanced degree (MS/PhD) or professional school (MD/MO). I will be taking a gap year after graduation to get additional training in the biotech industry.

What’s a fun or surprising fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

Both of my parents work in the tech industry, but I am not good with technology, and I love donkeys.
