The place Cassidy Freeman loves most on the WSU Pullman campus is the same place she has worked the past three years, right inside the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Emergency medicine is Cassidy’s passion, and, if you haven’t noticed, her cat ears are another. Once she earns her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Cassidy plans to pursue an emergency internship.

“Visiting an emergency room is often a very difficult experience for owners and their pets and I feel fulfilled supporting them through that,” Cassidy said. “Sometimes I get to do life-saving work and reunite an animal with their family. Sometimes I get to know I’m making an animal’s last moments meaningful. Those are the memories that make up for the hard ones.”

Originally from Spokane Valley, Washington, Cassidy completed her undergraduate degree at Eastern Oregon University. Cassidy has two 7.5-year-old dogs: her “favorite menace,” Walter, a neutered Pomchi, and Magnolia, a Chihuahua mix she calls “the most beautiful flower in the garden.”

Cassidy said WSU’s variety of experience and non-tracking curriculum prepared her for her career.

“WSU has helped me learn new skills and broaden my interests. I am definitely a small animal girl, but even the large animal rotations give me skills that are transferable across species,” she said.

Fun Fact: Cassidy is a video game enthusiast and a horror movie fan. Her favorite horror movie is “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
