Meet the Class of 2025: Brendon Deruyter

It’s a match! Participating in the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program, fourth-year veterinary student Brendon Deruyter is off to a small animal rotating internship at the University of Minnesota.

“I will miss all the great people and memories I have made,” Brendon said. “Getting to develop relationships with the people that I interact with every day and hopefully getting to make their lives a bit more interesting, if not a little more fun, is my favorite thing to do. I also will miss the friends and groups that I have gotten to play sports with, whether it be Thursday night roller hockey or the intramural teams for basketball and soccer.”

Growing up on a dairy farm in Zillah, Washington, Brendon was initially drawn to large animal medicine, but with the help of the skills learned in WSU’s Open Clinical Skills Lab and Dr. Julie Cary’s wisdom, Brendon has found a new love for small animal medicine and surgery.

“I can still be found working on cows every once in a while,” he said.

Brendon is on his way to be a two-time alumnus of the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. He earned his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry when he was just 20. He earned his associate’s degree before he was 18.

Brendon shares his home with Remington – Remi for short – a 9-year-old Brittany spaniel.

Fun Fact: Brendon was voted the loudest among his class of 2025 peers.
