Meet the Class of 2025: Marianne Youngstrom

Marianne Youngstrom didn’t initially dream of becoming a veterinarian, but through her love for animals and work in animal behavioral research, she discovered a calling for veterinary medicine — particularly feline medicine.

Marianne has already accepted a position close to home at Cara Veterinary, a small animal practice with several locations in and around Seattle, where she will begin new graduate mentorship.

“Ultimately, I aspire to become a feline-focused veterinarian and transition to a feline-only practice,” Marianne said. “My externships in feline-only settings reaffirmed that this path truly fills my cup and aligns with my passion.”

She said WSU allowed her to fully embrace her love for feline medicine.

“My fourth-year rotations have helped me celebrate and enhance my focus on feline-only medicine,” Marianne said.  “Although WSU doesn’t offer strictly feline-specific courses, I’ve channeled my enthusiasm through the Feline Club and by surrounding myself with a community of fellow cat enthusiasts.”

Back at home Marianne and her husband, Eric, have two cats of their own: a 15-year-old “muffin master” named Mr. Bojangles; and a 1.5-year-old whirlwind named Penelope Margaret. They are also the proud owners of adventurer and couch potato Axel Whitepaw, an 8-year-old mixed-breed dog.

Fun Fact: Marianne is up for anything outdoors – trail running, cycling, hiking, camping, paddleboarding. She also finds joy in eating peanut butter and pickle sandwiches.
