Dr. Mara S. Varvil joined the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022 as an assistant professor of clinical pathology. Her research interests are in diagnostic techniques and methods with the goal of improving accuracy and faster diagnosis times. Her other interests include teaching and using case-based learning for veterinary students and residency training.

She is currently working on projects to evaluate the accuracy of diagnosis using digital cytology compared to traditional glass slide cytology evaluations. Additionally, she is conducting educational and training research in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory.

Her previous work was in the field of molecular biology and comparative pathobiology looking at miRNA expression in canine urothelial carcinoma and the potential to use these small regulatory RNAs as diagnostic markers for disease.
