Biography
Dr. Werners is a veterinary pharmacologist recognized for his commitment to educational research and his leadership in academic veterinary medicine. He earned his veterinary degree from Utrecht University in 1999, followed by a PhD and European board certification in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology in 2005. After completing his PhD and board certification and with several years in private equine practice under his belt, he joined the Equine Science Department at Utrecht University, where he completed an equine medicine residency and was actively involved in the ambulatory clinical service. During his tenure at Utrecht, Dr. Werners also served for many years on the management team of the Department of Equine Sciences.
In 2010, Dr. Werners transitioned to the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, before joining St. George’s University (SGU) in 2011 as professor of veterinary pharmacology and toxicology. His dedication to advancing veterinary education led him to complete a master’s in education at SGU in 2019. Throughout his career, Dr. Werners has held various leadership positions, most recently serving as assistant dean of academics and interim director of Student Success at SGU. In 2025 he received the AAVPT teaching award for his contributions to veterinary pharmacology education.
He is currently the senior vice-president of the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (ECVPT) and chairs its Examination Committee.
