Biography

Dr. Babiche Heil is a new clinical assistant professor of comparative theriogenology in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. After she earned her master’s degree in veterinary medicine and her DVM with honors from Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2010, she completed a rotating internship in equine medicine, surgery, and anesthesia, in addition to a second internship in equine reproduction. After multiple back-to-back equine breeding seasons between the Northern and Southern hemispheres, she relocated to New Zealand in 2014. While in private practice in New Zealand, she started her residency in theriogenology via the alternate route in conjunction with Louisiana State University and she became a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in 2019. She has since worked as a stud veterinarian on a large thoroughbred farm in Australia, in a mixed practice in the high country of New Zealand’s South Island, and as a canine and equine reproduction specialist for a large private practice in New Zealand. Her clinical interests include all things theriogenology and, in particular, equine theriogenology and the problem mare. Her main research area has been the equine reproductive tract microbiome. Outside of work, Babiche is a keen hiker, and she hopes to become more involved in (expedition) adventure racing.
