Biochemistry student Emily Kophs is a third-generation Coug, but she couldn’t fathom the tight-kit Cougar culture until she witnessed it first-hand. “I grew up hearing about the amazing community of students and alumni, but I didn’t believe it until I experienced it for myself. I have met some of my favorite people at WSU, and I love that everyone shares the same excitement for being a Coug,” she said. Emily hopes to use her biochemistry for good. “My dream is to attend medical school to become a doctor specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics.”
Where are you from and where did you graduate high school?
I am from Vancouver, Washington, and I graduated from Skyview High School in 2019. I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and I am currently a junior at WSU.
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
In my free time I love listening to music, watching movies, and spending time with my friends and family. My favorite music genre is pop and my favorite movie is “Sleepless in Seattle.”
What’s your favorite thing about WSU?
My favorite part of WSU is the people. I am a third-generation Coug, so I grew up hearing about the amazing community of students and alumni, but I didn’t believe it until I experienced it for myself. What’s your favorite course you’ve taken at WSU?
My favorite course was Honors English 298 with DJ Lee because she created unique ways for us to stay connected during the pandemic. For my final project I got to make a podcast with my grandparents, who I couldn’t see in person because of COVID-19. I never would have made a podcast otherwise, but now I’m an expert and I have something with my grandparents that I will cherish forever.
What’s a unique fun fact about you?
I once convinced my brother and his friend the car we were in was exploding – it was just in neutral.
What are your career goals?
I plan on using my biochemistry degree to pursue a career in the medical field. My dream is to attend medical school to become a doctor specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics.
What’s one of your favorite things?
One of my favorite things is calligraphy. I love being creative and finding ways to use calligraphy is always a nice break from studying. It also comes in handy whenever there is a poster or sign that needs to be made.
