Q&A with genetics and cell biology student Petra Bernsten

Petra Bernsten is not only excelling in the classroom as a genetics and cell biology major in the College of Veterinary Medicine, but she is also one of the top collegiate wrestlers in the country.

When she wraps up her undergraduate studies this spring, the Sequim, Washington, native plans to head north to attend pharmacy school at WSU Spokane. 

What initially drew you to your major?

The amount of research that is developing in the field. 

Who has been the most influential mentor or professor during your time at WSU?

The most influential mentor I have had is my coach for wrestling, Phil Burnett. He has made a community for me to thrive in and helped me through my college years. 

Have you had any opportunities to work in a lab or conduct research while at WSU?

Yes! I worked in Law lab under professor Nathan Law. This allowed me to sprout my interest in research and to know what I like and dislike about research. 

What advice would you give to someone thinking about majoring in a field within the College of Veterinary Medicine?

Even though the trek is hard, it is all worth it in the end if you are passionate about what you are learning about. 

What’s your favorite thing about WSU?

The community! 

What are your post-graduation plans?

I plan to go to pharmacy school at WSU Spokane. I hope to become a licensed pharmacist there. 

What hobbies or extracurricular activities have you enjoyed at WSU?

I have loved wrestling for WSU, and it has made me realize how much of a community I have here at WSU. 

What’s a fun or surprising fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

I am second in the nation for wrestling in the NCWA!
