Like all DVM students at WSU, second-year ambassador Jessica Thompson’s introduction to veterinary school began with the Cougar Orientation Leadership Experience (COLE), an off-site and on-site retreat designed to promote collaboration and team building.
“COLE was really meaningful to me because it was the very first activity that our class did as a group, and it allowed me to make strong relationships with my peers right from the start,” she said.
Jessica is interested in small animal emergency medicine, mobile medicine, cardiology, and neurology, and she decided to attend WSU because of the non-tracking curriculum, cost, and the importance the program places on balancing school, work, and personal life.
In Jessica’s view, what makes WSU’s DVM program truly special is its dedication to student well-being. Faculty and administration, she said, are willing to adjust classes and curricula to ensure all students have the opportunity to become the best future veterinarians possible.
Other exceptional aspects of the program, she said, are the Optional Clinical Skills Laboratory (OCSL) and early hands-on clinical experience. These opportunities provide a safe environment to practice essential skills and solidify the knowledge gained in foundational first-year classes.
For those entering veterinary school, Jessica said one key is having balance in your life. She emphasizes the importance of making time for yourself, pursuing hobbies, and enjoying the experience. She noted that Pullman, although a small town, offers various opportunities, including the chance to participate in various sports, running groups, craft groups, and more. Jessica’s advice to her fellow students is to explore these opportunities, get to know their classmates beyond the realm of veterinary medicine, and ensure a well-rounded and enjoyable experience.
