Dr. Jeff Abbott is a veterinarian, veterinary pathologist, and educator focused on veterinary medical education, assessment, and student success. He is assistant dean for professional students, associate chair of veterinary medical education, professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, director of the WSU DVM Veterinary Diagnostic Challenge, and the Berger Keatts Distinguished Professor. A 1997 graduate of WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Abbott also earned his Ph.D. from WSU and is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathology. Before returning to WSU in 2021, he spent 16 years at the University of Florida, where he was recognized for excellence in teaching.
Dr. Abbott’s educational work focuses on using assessment as a tool for learning and developing innovative approaches that engage students. As director of the Diagnostic Challenge, he leads a high-fidelity simulation program that helps students apply their knowledge while developing communication and clinical reasoning skills. His teaching and educational leadership span veterinary immunology, case-based learning, clinical teaching, and assessment. He is also involved in faculty development through the College’s Teaching Academy. His biomedical research interests include animal health, infectious disease, immunology, oncology, and veterinary pathology.
