Giving Stories

Our donors make the difference

When my career path led me to fundraising over 16 years ago, I knew I couldn’t ask anyone to support something I didn’t also support myself. I felt it would be disingenuous. And I am lucky to work with others who feel the same way.

Melle: The true story of a miraculous rescue, a helping hand, an extraordinary surgery, and the love for one dog

A few days after the New Year in 2014, Laurie Boukas of Richland, Washington, was walking her two Border Collies, Lucy and Connor, when she saw a Pontiac Trans Am drive by. Laurie, who had just moved to Richland a few weeks before with her husband, Nick, saw the car turn around and drive by again.

A BIG thank you!

In its 125th year, Washington State University celebrates the success of our largest fundraising effort to date.

Theia: An incredible story of survival, hope, and compassion

Theia, an ownerless 1-year-old bully breed mix, came to the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital in March after being hit by a car, bludgeoned over the head with a hammer, and then buried in a field. She returned to Pullman weeks later to have surgery on her sinuses, which were badly damaged from the blows to her head.

Our generous alumni

When I think of our graduates, one word comes to mind—pride. I feel pride when I see them enter our program here at WSU and grow to become confident veterinarians, surgeons, and professionals when they graduate. I’m proud of them when they are hired for their first jobs, and when they succeed in their careers.

David and Sandi Bielski: From the Office of Development and Alumni Relations

I first met David Bielski (’70 Comm.) in 2002 at a WSU Alumni Association Board meeting. He mentioned to me that he’d been to the college several times to talk about pet loss and his company, Petland Cemetery in Aberdeen, Washington. The business was started in 1973 by three partners—one was David’s father and another was Cougar alumnus Glenn Hilliard (’54 DVM).

Keeping families together

Sometimes it takes many bends in the road to get where you are going. For Nick Snider (’14 DVM), he managed a coffee stand, he and his wife, Jennifer, worked as camp counselors, and he went back to school planning to become a biology teacher.

Ken and Lori Jacobsen

Ken Jacobsen (’77 BS; ’82 DVM) knows the value of an excellent education. As a WSU graduate, he says his education was central to his success as a veterinarian and a businessman. So when he and his wife, Lori, had the opportunity to give back, a gift to the Teaching Academy was a natural fit. […]
