Dr. Gary (’61 DVM) & Marie Duskin

Gary Duskin (’61 DVM) and his wife Marie became Benefactors in 2011. Motivated by the financial burdens faced by family members who attended WSU and their own economic struggles as students, they endowed the G. Gary and L. Marie Duskin Endowed Scholarship to help future students overcome rising costs in veterinary education.

A respected specialist in equine medicine and surgery, Gary was a founding partner of the Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish, Washington. He retired in 1995. He and Marie also owned the Top o’ the Ridge Thoroughbred Farm near Everett, Washington. He helped found the Washington State Horse Council and served as its president from 1989 through 1991. He was active in the International Society for Theriogenology, studying breeding soundness in animals, and served in several positions with the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association, including its president in 1985-1986. In 2000, he was selected by his peers as Veterinarian of the Year in Washington State. The Department of Animal Sciences honored Gary with a Distinguished Service Award in 1991 for his assistance in developing the equine program at WSU.

Gary and Marie were classmates at Arlington (Washington) High School and married when they were students at WSU. Marie interrupted her education to work in the agronomy department so she could help put Gary through veterinary school. All four of Gary and Marie’s children, Scott, Todd, Lisa and Chris graduated from WSU.

Gary Duskin passed away unexpectedly on August 2, 2017. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in the students supported by the Duskin Scholarship.
