Hometown: Snohomish, WA

Undergraduate Degree: Animal Sciences (WSU)

Area of Interest: Equine Medicine and Surgery

Emma Atkinson has always been drawn to horses, but it’s the blend of science and problem-solving that solidified her path in equine medicine.

After graduation – just eight days away – Emma will begin the next chapter of her career in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where she will complete an equine internship at Roaring Fork Equine Medical Center.

“Being a veterinarian has been a lifelong goal of mine,” she said. “It’s such a special opportunity to spend our days with animals, advocating for them, learning from them, while also forming strong relationships with their caretakers.”

At WSU, Emma found both the training and support to turn that goal into reality. From equine dental trips to advanced surgery labs and hands-on electives, she credits WSU’s equine team with helping her build confidence and practical skills.

“The entire equine department has encouraged me, supported me, and given me the confidence to pursue my goals,” she said. “Many of my best memories and skills that I can apply directly to practice have come from the hard work of the equine personnel, whether that be organizing or teaching trips to do dentals on ranch horses, our fourth-year advanced equine surgery lab, or even the equine electives made available during first through third year.”

Emma says her experiences at WSU have shaped both her skillset and her outlook on practice, building a strong foundation as she prepares for internship training in a busy referral setting.

Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys reading, cooking, live music, and caring for her many plants. She also spends time with her dog, Millie, and her hamster, Corduroy, and can often be found walking nearby trails or unwinding with a paint-by-number project.

Fun Fact: Emma is a dual U.S./U.K. citizen.
