Study participation

Researcher in a field with a small herd of curious holstein cows.

AAHP FDIU investigators employ several methods to identify potential study participants. These include:

  • Screening diagnostic lab results
  • Veterinarian referrals
  • Direct herd contact

Study participants are generally referred to the FDIU by their veterinarian. Personnel then contact the herd owner and explain who we are and what our sampling entails. Participating herds receive:

  • Confidential reports of all results
  • Advice on herd management practices and outbreak control

Producers should be aware that diagnostic laboratory results are considered public records, and therefore accessible by the Freedom of Information Act. Our study records are not public information, and are kept confidential. This has been challenged twice in court. For producers with further concerns, please contact our principle investigators.
