WSU has received the five‑year, federal grant to continue and expand its NIH Protein Biotechnology Training Program for doctoral students in science and engineering.

Engineering Professor Susmita Bose and emeritus Veterinary Medicine Professor Terry McElwain were elected to the WSAS board of directors. Doug Call, professor of molecular epidemiology, was chosen as secretary.

WSU studies will be used by a CDC network combating antimicrobial resistance.

This discovery means that doctors could quickly know which antibiotics will or won’t work for a patient’s life-threatening infection, a quandary that doctors face on a daily basis in hospitals around the world.

Douglas R. Call, associate professor in WSU’s Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology department, is the first recipient of the Caroline Engle Distinguished Professor in Research on Infectious Diseases. Dr. Call’s distinguished professorship will span four years.

“It’s always an honor when colleagues recognize the value of our work,” says Dr. Call, a molecular epidemiologist who specializes in antibiotic resistance research. “Our lab will use the awarded funds to conduct pilot studies and to support graduate education and recruitment.”
